About this work
Description
This is an extract from a dramatisation "Dear Little Fanny" by Jennifer Howarth in which Juliet Aubrey plays Fanny Burney. Fanny, in Paris in 1810, is told that the pain and swelling in her breast will require surgery. Her anxieties for herself, and her consideration for husband and son are moving. When the operation begins, with seven surgeons at her bedside, and a cambric handkerchief across her face through which she can see the knife, she realizes they will remove the whole breast. Several months later she is well. She lives into her 80s!
