About this work

Description

The interior of an anatomist's dissecting room: a man in his coffin (suggesting his cadaver has been stolen) sits up and sees a skeleton, posed in the manner of Houdon's écorché with a pipe in its mouth. On a table nearby, a double-headed foetus preserved in spirit, human skulls, femurs, dissecting knives. Left, another cadaver on a table. Gas lights are suspended from a shallow dome (skylight?) in the ceiling. A dog tied to a table knocks over a chair and barks at the awakened man. Left, a man with a stick, wearing nightclothes, opens the room and looks on in horror
