Description
In his early life Schweitzer was a musician, clergyman, professor of theology at the University of Strasbourg, and conservator of old organs. Subsequently a medical student (1905-1913), doctor of medicine, missionary in Lambaréné (French Equatorial Africa, now Gabon), organ recitalist, and author of works of cultural criticism. He became famous in his long lifetime for his work for Africans afflicted with leprosy and trypanosomiasis, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952
