About this work

Description

A member of the Chapard family of veterinarians practising at Chantilly for over a century. Possibly Frédéric Chapard. A pocket on his apron is inscribed "Le feu Chapart", indicating a deceased member of the family, perhaps depicted in 1879, the date on the coat of arms. He holds a scalpel in one hand and a lap dog in the other. Left background, a horse with a wooden leg led by a groom. Right a horse in a trap. Around, veterinary instruments. Top right, a parody of the arms of Chantilly including a post horn and the date 1879
